Travel Announcements

Travel Information Update - January 4, 2007

The Government of Belize has taken steps to prevent incidents like the robberies which took place in the Mountain Pine Ridge and Caracol/Chiquabul areas in May and June 2006 (see travel announcements of May 12, May 19 and June 9).  Two alleged members of the "highway bandits" have been arrested and are remanded awaiting trial.

Communication systems in the area have been enhanced with funds from the Belize Tourism Board.  The Belize Police Force has set up continuous patrols on the Chiquabul Road for the entire distance to the Caracol Mayan site.  Seven vehicles patrol the area during daylight hours.

Private resort managers have also contributed to the security of this area.  Tour expeditions are now carried out in a caravan style, with specific points of departure and arrival being carefully coordinated among resort tour planners.

Anyone planning to visit the Caracol and Mountain Pine Ridge areas should contact the resort where they have reservations and speak to the security officer regarding safety measures that have been implemented and which will be in place at the time of the proposed travel.
