Travel Announcement - June 9, 2006
This is an addendum to the May 12 and to the May 19 travel information found on this site. Criminal activities continue to target tourists in the western area of Belize, known as the Cayo District.
• On June 1, three tourist vans were stopped by the five armed bandits on the road leading from the Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves to the Western Highway near Teakettle Village. The first van was stopped at 3:30 p.m. and passengers were robbed and held hostage until the third van was stopped at 4:30 p.m. Nine American citizens and ten other tourists were robbed.
• On June 2, a lodge west of San Ignacio was robbed of guns and ammunition.
None of the stolen goods have been recovered.
