Welcome Reception in honor of Ambassador Robert J. Dieter and Mrs. Dieter - September 30, 2005

 amb welcome speech
 U.S. Ambassador Robert J. Dieter

Welcome, and thank you for joining us tonight.  My wife Gwynneth and I feel fortunate to be in Belize and appreciate the opportunity to represent the United States in this beautiful nation with such warm and friendly people.

Belize and The United States enjoy an excellent relationship based on migration, trade, tourism and education.  These close ties between our nations became even more evident during the recent tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.

I want to express the heartfelt thanks of the United States for the kind offers of support from the Government and people of Belize.  In addition to the countless individual acts of generosity, we appreciate the Prime Minister's offer of assistance and the moving generosity of the Embassy of Belize in Washington canceling their National Day reception in order to donate the money allocated for the celebration to the American Red Cross.

The U.S. Government has been working closely with the National Emergency Management Office – better known as NEMO - to share information and help our nations work together in responding to disasters.

Through our Humanitarian Assistance Program, The United States is spending US$300K to construct a NEMO warehouse in Belmopan.  Completion is expected in November and the facility will house food and medical supplies to help victims in case of disaster.

Over the past  four years the United States also has committed an average of more than US 2.5 million annually to Belize for a variety of projects including HIV/AIDS awareness/education, assistance combating drug trafficking, and funding to protect the environment and promote education.

As Ambassador, I am committed to continuing our nations' collaboration on a wide range of issues and embrace this opportunity to work with the government and people of Belize.

Again, I would like to express my appreciation for taking the time to share your evening with us.  Gwynneth and I look forward to getting to know you druing our time in Belize.

Please allow me to close with a toast to Belize, and join me in raising your glasses: to the Land of the Free by the Carib Sea.

Thank you.
