Ambassador's Statement on the Anniversary of 9-11
Six years ago today - September 11, 2001 - nineteen men orchestrated unprovoked and cowardly attacks flying two commercial airliners into the World Trade Center in New York City and one into the Pentagon in Washington, DC. A fourth plane was intended for another target in Washington, DC, but courageous passengers onboard Flight 93 sacrificed their lives to prevent further tragedy and crashed the plane in a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The 2,973 innocent people killed in these attacks included men and women from more than 90 different countries. They were adherents of many faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Two Belizean-Americans were victims that day: Walwyn Wellington Stuart, Jr. and Alva Cynthia Jeffries Sanchez.
President Bush has proclaimed today - September 11, 2007 - as Patriot Day and has directed that the flag be flown at half-staff. As we exit the building today, let the flag be a reminder to us of those who died and their families.
Thank you.
